In 1952, she married actor, Maxwell Reed. “After I’d been going out with him for a few months, he asked me to marry him,” said Joan. “I thought, ‘well, I better’ because he took my virginity.” The pair divorced in 1956.

Joan married her second husband, Anthony Newley, in 1963. The pair went onto have two children together. In her autobiography, Passion For Life, Joan wrote: “Although Tony professed abundant love for me, he confided during our stormy courtship that he’d never been faithful to one woman.” That pattern continued throughout their marriage and the couple divorced in 1971.

After her divorce to Anthony Newly, Joan met Ron Kass. “Within weeks,” said Joan, “he’d asked me to marry him. This was jumping the gun, to say the least, as he was still married himself, with three kids under six.” Yet, they married in 1972 and had a daughter together. However, his addiction to drugs and his accumulation of debt left Joan with no option but divorce in 1983.

Joan married her fourth husband, Peter Holm, married in Las Vegas in 1985. After a bitter separation rife with rumours of infidelity, they divorced in 1987. “The divorce proceedings were so dramatic that they made Dynasty look like Little House On The Prairie,” recalls Joan in Passion For Life.

Yet, the fifth time proved to be the charm when she married her current husband, Percy Gibson, in 2002. Although more than thirty years her junior, Joan describes Percy as “an amazing man, he is so kind and so caring.”
Her secret to a lasting marriage? “Understand that there will be highs and lows,” she says. “People get married on the crest of lust. Once that’s gone, they look and think: ‘What the hell? Who is this person?” She said: “You won’t always agree about everything, but you need to enjoy each other’s company.”
